They basically shatter the light by little crystals below the leaf epidermis. This grants the plant a higher photosynthesis rate. A part of the fractioned light gets reflected. The light that comes back has a small wavelength, thats why it appears blue to us. This process is called iridescence. Not only begonias are able to perform this.
