View of Abandoned gold mine at mountains

Sleeping over at an abandoned gold mine on a Canadian mountain. We explored every building and even the abandoned mine. History: The Mascot Gold Mine was in operation from 1936 to 1949. 7.1 tones of gold was extracted from the mascot mine. That is over 400 million dollars in today's market. 130 men worked the Mascot Gold Mine. Each man made approx $4.75 per day. Many of the men actually lived and passed away at the mine site. After shutting down in 1949 the site was abandoned for many years after. In the 1990s, the insurers for the mascot mine property was concerned that visitors to the site could lodge liability claims for personal injuries. They wanted the mascot mine to be burnt down. This plan did not go through thankfully. In 1995 the Upper Similkameen Indian band re-roofed several buildings to help preserve them. The province then bought the mine site for $740,000. They also fixed and stabilized the structures over the following years. In 2003 the province provided $300,000 to retrofit the site for tourism. The wooden structures included former dormitories, a cookhouse and machine sheds. In 2004 the mascot mine site opened for tours. It later closed for tours in 2017. The buildings clearly needed more repairs and attention for the structures to last. In 2021 The province gave a grant of $800,000 and they plan to reopen for tours in 2023 after many repairs and upgrades have been completed.
