Cruise ship flatten out water surface beside it

We were departing from the island of Grand turk, when I noticed the waves faltered out because we backed out of port. Because we did so, the flat back of a cruise doesn’t cleanly cut through the waves and flattens the water surface beside the ship, creating this weird effect.
