My wife and I visited the San Francisco Botanical Garden in 2020 (during the pandemic) and during our stroll, we noticed a fuzzy friend, a Spotted Tussock Moth caterpillar, sharing the same path. After recording, we used a postcard to scoop the friend into a better sheltered area to protect it from getting stepped on or attacked by animals.

I filmed these caterpillars in the tree behind my house. The caterpillars are from the Ermine Moth. During the summer they completely cover trees and bushes with a plastic-like silk that makes the plants look dead and ghostly. They can come in hundreds. But after 2 weeks the caterpillars will have become butterflies and the tree will grow it's leaves back like nothing happened and with no damage.

Moth caterpillar on finger with flower camouflage

This is a Wavy-Lined Emerald Moth Caterpillar, one of the coolest caterpillars you’ll come across, it’s known for its camouflage tactic. I found this one in our garden while visiting my hometown during summer. This caterpillar uses silk to stick whatever plant it’s feeding on onto it’s back, in order to hide away from predators. The one I found has basil flowers on its back since it currently lives on our basil plant. What’s even cooler is that once the flowers on her back wilt, it replaces them with new ones Here is an extra article about them: https://twistedsifter.com/2012/05/wavy-lined-emerald-moth-camouflaged-looper-info-pics/
